Previously, from 2009 to 2014, he was a member of the Indonesian cabinet serving as the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs. In 2006, he was appointed as the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), becoming the first person from the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) to hold this highest position. In 2003, he held the position of Operations Assistant at the Central Base of the Indonesian Air Force and was appointed Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Air Force. In 2001, he was appointed as the Commander of the Air Force for Eastern Indonesia.

He graduated from the Indonesian Air Force Academy in 1973.
